Nihaal Faizal (b. 1994)
My work for the last three years has dealt with the same questions and concerns - those of freedom, security and power but in different situations and contexts as diverse as the city as an entity to childhood. It has dealt with the effects of power on freedom and the security power brings. It has also dealt with the experiences of security and the paradoxes associated with freedom.
To explore these preoccupations my main medium is that of photography. Although I have found that most of the time photography by itself isn't enough - digital manipulation is required. This is sometimes in the form of combining multiple photographs to form a single image or sometimes by modifying the colour tone or visual arrangement.
My new work deals with the experiences of childhood, the memories of those experiences and the interaction of those memories with the present self. Here again questions of freedom and security arise but are more subtle than in my early work.
Nihaal Faizal was chosen as a Juried Winner in Round #3 of the 2012 Showcase Series.
