James Holdsworth gained notoriety during the Punk revolution in London. Originally working in the world of fine art design, James sold designs internationally (Japan, Germany, USA) as 'Little James'. He then moved to New York to work on rock and roll commissions and exhibitions. Currently he lives and works in the east end of London.
James Holdsworth’s works deal with issues of urban complexity and the relationship between the consumer and the consumed icons of 21st century society. Each work uses contemporary characters as the protagonists in a world that is seemingly peeling apart. His paintings expose the dark reality behind the glossy façades – the iconographic cartoons are here the representation of a consumer laden dream world, behind which lie layers of a more brutal reality.
This series of paintings are a development from his experiences as a street artist around London and Los Angeles, they are his union of street art and fine art. Holdsworth uses infamous images rendered in a mix of paints, varnishes and glitters, over layers of newspaper cuttings, vintage posters and archive material evoking the confused mess that is modern society.
The paintings are the future and the past at once – a mix of humour, horror and harmony.
