Metis-nl Gallery is pleased to present this 4th solo exhibition of Cuban painter Douglas Pérez Castro. The first show took place in 2003, just after Douglas left the Rijksakademie. Now, after 10 years, the artist developed in a remarkable way and has exhibited successfully in Europe, South Africa, South- and Middle America and in the United States of America.

Pérez Castro creates imaginary worlds where past and present, nature and culture, realistic and virtual elements exist at the same time, at the same level, in the same space. He sometimes paints big metropolitan spaces in which old and modern architecture emerge next to one another. The roofed spaces  refer to the enormous sugar factories, once the only industry in Cuba. Within these spaces airplanes are flying , roads and highways crossing, with people busy transporting goods  from one place to another. Sometimes they look like timecapsules containing human figures and monstrous animals.

It is obvious to relate all these transporting activities to Cuban reality.

The isolated situation of Cuba as an island, still suffering from free trade boycots without the possebilities of free traffic of goods and people and the need for human labour to reach a Utopia that still waits to be realised, all this is pictured by Douglas Pérez Castro in a science fiction world using many metaphors and surreal panoramas.

The continuous changing perspective and the different layers of reality give the spectator enough food for thought about the way we arrange our environment. We create systems that aim at efficiency and profit, but it is not clear if the creatures  within these systems are still connected with nature and if their activities still make sense. These existential questions are not only connected with Cuban reality but refer equally  to other urban worlds where humans are involved in activities.
