Witzenhausen Gallery Amsterdam is proud to announce Sofia Maldonado’s first solo exhibition in Europe, Bling Bling Chicas. The show will open July the 3rd and will be on view till July the 31st.

Outdoors performance: as extracurricular activity, Sofia will be performing a collaborative mural with local artists: MickLaRock, Lil'shy and Flai. This extraordinary event will take place outside Witzenhausen Gallery on July 4th, from 2 p.m. on.

Maldonado works in an aesthetic inspired by the crossroads of youth and street culture, fashion trends, and naturalistic forms – a vision she explored through the numerous murals she painted across her native Puerto Rico in the early 2000s. Recently, the artist’s work became the subject matter of a controversy, appearing in several mass media in the U.S. The bone of contention was her 42nd Street Mural, where the artist explored the beauty and diversity of Caribbean women in New York City. In Bling Bling Chicas Maldonado brings her exotic iconography to Amsterdam where she will continue exploring diverse forms of female empowerment mixed with the attitude of the "street". Paintings, drawings and skateboard installations are the media she uses to convey the influence of Caribbean culture in its colors and organic forms.

Sofia Maldonado was born in Puerto Rico and received her MFA in Painting from the Pratt Institute, NY in 2006. Maldonado's most recent public mural projects have been presented by The Times Square Alliance and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, NY (2010); Real Art Ways, CT (2009); 10th Havana Biennale, Cuba (2009); Graphopoli, PR (2007) with exhibitions at Witzenhausen Gallery, Amsterdam (2010), Taller Puertorriqueño, PA (2009), Queens Museum of Art, NY (2009) and Graffiti Gone Global, FL (2009). In 2011 she will have solo exhibitions at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College, Winterpark, FL; University of Wisconsin, Madison; and a group show at the Ringling Museum, Sarasota, FL. In 2012 she will have a solo exhibition at Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD. Maldonado has given lectures and taught community workshops where she engages with the community and often has the youth community participate in her projects.
