CMA is pleased to present Inside Out/Outside In, the 5th annual celebration of artwork from CMA’s school partnerships and community programs. The exhibition will host both individual and collaborative pieces created by students in over 20 partnerships, as well as artworks created by the Teaching Artists themselves. CMA’s gallery will become home to a multitude of 2D and 3D projects, including large scale murals, 3D sculptures, pop up books, and a screening room to view films created during the 2012/2013 school year.  Viewed in its totality, the exhibition offers a composite of NYC neighborhoods and an emerging generation of art enthusiasts.

CMA Teaching Artists go into classrooms all over the city, bringing innovative arts enrichment programming to children ages 3-16 in New York City Public, Charter and Private Schools, and Community Centers. Over semester and year long residencies, CMA’s experienced Teaching Artists foster a culture of art-making and art appreciation with partner schools. Artists introduce children and their teachers to artwork by contemporary and master artists, different processes and art-making techniques, and new forms of creative self-expression. In addition, CMA services the community with needs-based community programs by providing an inclusive artistic environment for children and families regardless of means, to create, learn about and benefit from art in a recreational setting.

Each collaborative piece reflects the unique energy of the participating program and their diverse communities while showcasing the vision of the artists. A large scale ‘under the sea’ themed embroidered tapestry contrasts with cityscapes built out of cardboard, plaster and paint, and an imaginary shadow-city created out of colored cellophane slides, duct tape will sit beside plaster-painted creatures. Works created by Teaching Artists, all of whom are practicing artists, will be on view, including a project called ‘SMASH TYPE: Keyboard’, by Ben Weber, a piece that invites use of hand made cardboard stamps to play with notions of ‘messaging’, keyboards, and technology. See past examples of Weber’s SMASH Type artwork from Governors Island:

This exhibition features works created by students attending PS 11 William T. Harris School, PS 81 Thaddeus Stevens School, PS 115 Daniel Mucatel School, PS 116 Mary Lindley Murray School, PS 124 The Yung Wing School, PS 130 Immigrant Social Services, PS 158 Bayard Taylor School, PS 347 American Sign Language and English Lower School, PS 3 Charrette Elementary School, Avenues of the World School, The Garden School, Kings Collegiate Charter School, New Explorations Into Science Technology and Math, the Renaissance Charter School, The School of the Future, Warbasse Nursery School, Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School, Comprehensive Kids Developmental School, Brooklyn Autism Center as well as the Teaching Artists who inspire them. Participating Teaching Artists include Bethany Allard, Cassandra Baez, Donna  Chung, Emily Collins, Cecilia de Corral, Ana Marva Fernandez, Katie LaClair, Caroline McAuliffe, Hiromi Niizeki, Christie O’Brien, Yung Oh Le Page, Agunda Okeyo, DJ Reed, Melissa Robles, Samantha Silverman, Ben Weber, and Cori Williams.
