Artist's CV

In graduate school I became interested in the structure of the grid as an organizing form. This practice began by doing a drawing a day which I put up on my wall, creating a visual diary. What became of interest to me was the way in which the separate drawings related and changed, as the wall was added to.  I translated this practice of combining separate elements in a grid structure into my paintings; the first series was “States of Mind”, which combined layered images, color and drawings to create visual narratives of time and memory. Over the years this practice has evolved into the current “Year in Color” series.

Since 2011, I have been making large-scale painting installations that render an abstract concept (time and its measurement) visual and literal. In my smaller paintings, each of which represents either an individual day or week, I translates a day's personal experiences and mood into a single color, and often divide the passage into color and a "neutral tone" according to universal patterns, such as the percentage of the moon that was in shadow on that date. My work strives to create an eloquent balance between the personal and universal, and between aesthetics and a conceptual practice.

The parameters for each year change, chronicling different aspects of time. In 2015, I included the writing that is usually the invisible component in my practice as the daily color/notation and then assigned a color which was a blend of the days for the month. The division of night and day was based on the reported length of the day, which produced a subtle shift in the angle of relationship between day and night over the course of the year.
