In this latest series of paintings, Moran takes on the role of a clairvoyant by envisioning the space where life and death intersect. Submerged within vigorous gestural abstractions are scenes in which figures slip in and out of material existence. Broadly inspired by the history of painting, from the mystical underpinnings of William Blake and Paul Gaugin, and the heady abstract expressionism of Willem de Kooning, Moran collapses genres to create a hybridity that fuses the lyric with the architectural.
In one of Moran’s new paintings, The Bride’s last encounter with her lovers, depicts tangles of flesh dissolving into sensuous textures. Fluttering among the fray, figures appear through a curtain of dense foliage. The painting represents a physical and subtle transitional zone – a testing ground, a passage through to somewhere else – where temptation beckons one last time. As with past exhibitions, at the very core of Moran’s work is the self in flux.
Kristine Moran lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA from Hunter College in New York after attaining her BFA at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. Moran has exhibited in solo shows at Nicelle Beauchene (New York) and Clark and Faria (Toronto). Her work has been exhibited in numerous groups shows, including Rogue Element at RH+ (Istanbul), Power of Selections at Western Exhibitions (Chicago) and The Big Gift: Calgary Celebrates Contemporary Art at Glenbow Museum (Calgary). Last year, Moran’s work was featured in Phaidon’s Vitamin P2 book., and her work has been acquired by several international public collections, including the Saatchi Collection (London, U.K.)
