Since the 1700s artists and the world they inhabit have been fair game for humorists. Gallery goers, art collectors, critics and curators – none have escaped the wicked pens and etching needles of clever cartoonists. Among the targets of ridicule are unruly, delusional painters, arrogant connoisseurs and art dealers, and elitist museums and arts organizations. By poking fun at art and artists these...   [more]

Drawing in France underwent profound changes before, during and after the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars (1789-1815). Prior to the Revolution, French artists looked to Italy and the classical past for their inspiration. As Romantic ideas spread there was increasing interest in nature, and the forces of nature as metaphors for the dramatic changes. The horse became the quintessential symbo...   [more]

British artist Mark Titchner’s language-based wall paintings and banners demonstrate how text and bold statements can be used to inspire people, communicate to the masses and bring together communities. His work often confronts the viewer with a proposition for a type of modern-day revolution. As the AGO’s international artist-in-residence this fall, Mark Titchner has been involved with a number of initiat...   [more]

Imaginary Homelands is both a thematic framework and a strategy for exhibition making. It is the culmination of a three-year experimental residency project that explored how the oscillation of people, ideas, and materials between two real places—in this case Bogotá and Toronto—could become a point of departure toward “locating” a fictionalized mid-way point. A product of this experiment, the exhibit...   [more]

Heavily influenced by his recent trips to South East Asia, Andre Petterson’s new body of work captures objects bursting with energy and movement caught in a split-second of time. Buddhist monks’ red robes, broken bicycles and clocks reflect the artist’s experience of witnessing a place where, for him, “time stood still.” Combined with Petterson’s signature imagery: sewing machines, dancers and ty...   [more]

Nickolas Muray and Frida Kahlo were at the height of their on-again, off-again, ten-year relationship when these pictures were taken. Their affair had started in 1931, after Muray was divorced from his second wife, and shortly after Kahlo's marriage to Mexican artist/muralist Diego Rivera. It outlived Muray's third marriage, and Kahlo's divorce and remarriage to Rivera, by one year, ending in 1941....   [more]
