James Kelly is pleased to present the exhibition by Wes Mills to tease a hummingbird. This will be Wes Mills’ third exhibition at the gallery and will consist of approximately eighteen new drawings.
19, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The exhibition will continue through December 8, 2012. The inspiration for the drawings originated from the continual unfolding and use of repeated marks as a meditative practice in Mills’ works. The use of repeated marks has been a common theme seen in the drawings since the early 90’s.
“Along with encounters and observations of hummingbirds since childhood, I found the meditative sound and motion of a humming bird in flight closely reminded me of these drawings”. Another group of drawings in the exhibition were made on green paper, and are titled, drawings for Oregon. This body of work relates to expectations one brings to something when looking, and how this possibly hinders one of actually seeing. There is freshness about this work and a delightful sense of spontinaity.
Wes Mills was born in Tucson, Arizona in 1960. He currently lives in Victor, Montana. His drawings have are in the collections of the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe, NM; The Harwood Museum, Taos, NM; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; and the Rose Museum, Brandeis University, MA, among other institutions.
