GEORG BASELITZ

Georg Baselitz is one of the major figures in the history of German art of the post-war era. Best known for his energetic and expansive paintings, he is also a prolific sculptor, printmaker and draughtsman. Having persistently flown in the face of whatever artistic convention predominated at the time – initially, Social Realism, later Abstraction and Informal Art – Baselitz has been able to claim a place for the last forty years as one of the most markedly original artists in the contemporary art world.

JAMES DRAKE

An internationally acclaimed artist whose work has been included in both the Venice Biennale and the Whitney Biennial, James Drake has explored political, social, and universal themes through the media of sculpture, video, installation, photography, and drawing. He is a superb draftsman, and expert sculptor specializing in welded-steel installations, a photographer and video artist.

Currently (through April 15) on display at the New Mexico Museum of Art is James Drake: Salon of a Thousand Souls which includes sculptures and works on paper by the Santa Fe – based artist dating from the 1980s to the present day. His work is in the permanent collection of over thirty museums, including the Albright-Knox Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He has had over sixty one-person shows and has been invited to participate in more than one hundred group exhibitions. Drake is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and two National Endowments for the Arts grants.
