Miguel Gandert will discuss the importance of the portrait in his work especially in its relationship to telling stories and examining different communities. He will also discuss the large format Polaroid images and use of color as compared to his better known black-and -white images he has created with both large format and 35mm film cameras.

Miguel Gandert earned a master’s in pho­tog­ra­phy from UNM in 1983. He started teach­ing at UNM not long after grad­u­a­tion. He has been a research asso­ciate with the South­west His­panic Research Insti­tute, asso­ciate direc­tor of Doc­u­men­tary Projects at the Cen­ter for Regional Stud­ies and been affil­i­ated with UNM depart­ments of Amer­i­can Stud­ies, Chi­cano Stud­ies, Art and Art His­tory, Media Arts, Archi­tec­ture, Anthro­pol­ogy and the Latin Amer­i­can and Iber­ian Institute.
