Four different artists, Diane Alire, Karl Koenig, Rob Thalmann, and Jorge Tristani, each show two sets of images both as photographs and photogravures. Early photography was a combination of etching techniques and the photographic image. Out of it emerged the two disciplines of gelatin silver photography and photogravure (and a wide range of non-silver processes which we cannot cover in this exhibition). While photography became practiced widely, gravure gradually fell by the wayside until it was revived in the early nineties with the discovery of polymer films. The juxtaposition of these techniques demonstrates the different sensibilities and transformations that can be achieved when a photograph becomes a gravure.
