Aaron Payne Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of over 25 paintings by Raymond Jonson (1891-1982). The exhibition will focus on the dynamic and singularly beautiful abstractions painted by Jonson between 1931 and 1950. There will be more than a dozen works from his Transcendental Period (1938-1941).
In the summer of 1938, in the city of Santa Fe, Emil Bisttram and Raymond Jonson founded the Transcendental Painting Group. The group's goal was to carry painting beyond the appearance of the physical world to create forms which were universal and timeless. To differentiate their aims from those of the non-objective painters they chose the name "Transcendental." The founding members of the group were Raymond Jonson, Emil Bisttram, Ed Garman, Robert Gribbroek, Lawren Harris, William Lumpkins, Florence Miller, Agnes Pelton, Horace Towner Pierce, Dane Rudhyar, and Stuart Walker.
The exhibition at the gallery coincides with the exhibition, To Form from Air: Music and the Art of Raymond Jonson, which opens at the new Raymond Jonson Gallery within the University of New Mexico Art Museum in September 2010.
