Eight Modern is pleased to ann ounce the exhibition Year of the Snake.

\n

In honor of the Chinese New Year\, Year of the Snake celeb rates the snake\, whether literally\, linearly\, or through associations.\n

The Chinese New Year\, which fell on F ebruary 10 this year\, is the most important of the traditional Chinese hol idays. The snake is the sixth of the twelve animals that make up the Chines e zodiac.

\n

Within the Chinese zodiac\, the time in the cycle in which a person is born is seen as influencing the ir personality and events in their life. A person born in the year of the s nake is said to be intelligent\, rational\, ambitious and good with money\, but also jealous and materialistic.

\n

This exhibition\, however\, takes as its focus not the zodiacal\, but the v isual qualities of the snake. The creature’s undulating body is evoked thro ugh meandering serpentine lines\, the texture of reptilian flesh\, the habi tats in which it lurks\, and its phallic associations.

\n

Fourteen artists are featured in this exhibition\, includ ing Alexander Calder\, Ming Fay\, Tony Fitzpatrick\, Flor Garduño\, Fay Ku\ , Katherine Lee\, David X Levine\, Robert Mangold\, Siobhan McBride\, René Peña\, Clayton Porter\, Erika Wanenmacher and Todd Ryan White.
