My goal as a painter is to create dimensional pieces that invite the viewer to explore visual deceptions. Within each flat canvas a variety of paint applications form layers waiting to be excavated. These layers of paint create illusionary depth to literal flatness. Unexpected areas within the paint reveal themselves as paint is added and subtracted repeatedly until there is a finished product. The palimpsestic approach of layer upon layer of dripped, poured, sanded, and scraped surfaces unveils a range of velocities, intuitive color decisions, chaotic yet structured lines, and a confusion of space. The amalgamation of these mark-making processes results in deceptively smooth yet multifaceted paintings.
