Jivan Lee is an oil painter based in Santa Fe, NM. He grew up in Woodstock, NY, and studied painting at Bard College with contemporary New York City painters Joseph Santore and Laura Battle. His work explores a distinctly modern possibility – using a whole lot of paint – while portraying what are oftentimes fairly traditional subjects. The resulting pieces are topographical records of the painting process; when viewed up close they celebrate paint for paint’s sake – luscious, colorful, sculptural, dimensional – and when viewed at a distance they collect into recognizable imagery. It’s a transformation that highlights the relationships between raw material, tangible reality, and what constitutes the images we perceive.

Jivan’s work has been exhibited nationally at museums and educational institutions – including MetroState University of Denver, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, the Taos Art Museum, and Bard College – and covered in publications such as Plein Air Magazine and Art Business News. In addition to painting, Jivan directs the Project for Art and the Environment and teaches at the University of New Mexico in Taos. His work is represented by Heinley Fine Arts in Taos, NM; Galerie Kornye West in Fort Worth, TX; Jack Leustig Imaging in Arroyo Seco, NM; and Jivan Lee Studio in Santa Fe, NM.
