John Randall Nelson - Mixed-media paintings

Gebert Contemporary at the Railyard is delighted to welcome back John Randall Nelson to open the gallery’s new season of exhibitions.

John Randall Nelson: Small Works is a collection of mixed media paintings on wood and an intriguing group of drawings and paintings on paper. The work is centered around playful but hardly innocent symbols, signs, and text. Bringing his distillation of psychological visuals to life with paint, found objects, and a delicate hand of intuitive, primitive drawing, Nelson seduces the viewer into an unfolding, developing story. The rich layers of paint, drawing, and applied objects give way to the underlying subtle layers of meaning in the artist’s personal world. The viewer, however, is always the final arbiter, bringing the solutions to the artist’s complex proposals. Nelson’s sensibility is often referred to as a kind of naïve innocence with a post-modern twist.

John Randall Nelson’s artwork as been exhibited nationally and internationally. He has completed commissions for collections as diverse as the National Endowment for the Arts, the United States Postal Service, and the Perrier Corporation of Paris, France. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections, such as the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Tamarind Institute, Target Corporation, and  Apple, Inc. Numerous public art projects include “Community Gardens” sited at the Matthew A. Henson/Hope VI Housing Projects, Phoenix, AZ and “La Memoria Vive” sited at Sky Harbor Airport, Phoenix, AZ.
