20140918141118-07__91714 A colorful and chaotic pastel collection
by

Think of the most stunning landscape photo you have seen. Now imagine that the scene you believed was a photograph was actually a concisely accurate pastel piece, painstakingly precise in every way. This pleasant illusion is what I experienced at the “2014 Pastel Society of New Mexico Signature Membership Show.” This show is a display of shockingly beautiful and realistic renderings of various subject matter, with a topic of interest to any viewer. Overall, it’s an impressive ar... [more]

ISEA, More Than Just Another Cool Acronym Written by Katy Crocker  //  November 8, 2011  //  Art, Design  //  No comments Ilove acronyms. ISEA is pronounced like a word, which—according to my college Linguistics professor—distinguishes it from initialism, and officially makes it an acronym. Think: idea with an ‘s,’ not I.S.E.A.  Here’s another: GOLF, an alleged acronym meaning “gentlemen only ladies, forbidden.” ISEA isn’t an alleged acronym, however; it stands for International Symposium for E... (Image: Erin Cone, Muse, 2011, Acrylic , 36 x 30 in. ; © Erin Cone) Erin Cone (b. 1976, Lubbock, Texas) Focusing on visual impact over narrative context, I subtly orchestrate realism to idealize my subject within a framework of design. I refine my paintings to essential forms, emphasizing certain elements and eliminating others to heighten expressive power. I deliberately create a push-and-pull between near-photorealistic detail and my own vocabulary of visual glitches that challenge that... [more]

(Image: Jonathan Sobol, Horn Power, 2011, Oil on Canvas, 14" x 11" Framed; © M.A. Doran Gallery) Jonathan Sobol I have been influenced by the history of art as I've encountered it. There have been many artists I've admired and learned from: the cave painters and carvers of petroglyphs, the sculptors of idols of Babylon and earlier. The Cycladic boys and Oceanic and African sculptors. The megalith builders, the anonymous builders of the great cathedrals, Titian, Tiepolo, Leonardo, Michaelangelo,... [more]

Matthew Irwin Santa Fe Reporter Where Culture Happens Full Text HERE Culture happens. That is, it can be curated, but it cannot be created intentionally. To be a part of culture, one has to be in it, participating. It doesn’t happen in newspapers or museums. Let me illustrate: In the mid-1950s, failed bandleader Cass Carr charged amateur shutterbugs $10 to provide them with the location and talent to take nude photographs of women. They began shooting in a makeshift YMCA, eventually moving to the cou... [more]

My favorite way to start a painting is to go out on location and do a small watercolor painting that captures the scene, color and mood at a particular time of day. Back in my studio I mak... [more]

You want to look, and look again, at a LaGro painting as your eye finds veiled images beneath layers of paint; human and animal forms may appear or recede before abstract elements of interwoven texture.
