Art or Not? Pizza.

Art or Not? One of the pictures described below is a genuine art work: every Friday the ArtSlant team asks our discerning readers to indulge in a game of spot the difference. On Monday week the answer will be revealed on our social media: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram #1 "... is a vivid visual representation that expounds the dichotomous act of consumerism: on the one hand, the form and gigantesque proportions of this highly desirable food item are playful and cartoonish, yet, they belie the terror of abundance, the deformity of modern vegetable produce, and an overwhelming feeling, of, quite literally, ha... 20140505213706-mike_kelley_aah_youth Some Closing Thoughts on the Mike Kelley Retrospective (MOCA Geffen, Los Angeles)

Mike Kelley at MOCA Geffen Contemporary > Los Angeles

To borrow a thought from Deleuze and Guattari, art is not chaos, but a composition of chaos that makes possible a wide range of unpredictable new emotions and ideas. It pushes at the borders of the imagination, inviting new ways of seeing, and sharping our capacities for critical reflection. Truly powerful art may even change how we perceive our world, and re-situate our agency within it. The Mike Kelley retrospective (currently on view at LA MoCA), reminds me of a quote by filmmaker David Lyn... [more]

Amrita Sher-Gil at National Gallery Of Modern Art - NGMA Bengaluru > India
March 30th - April 30th

Let me start with a small proviso which may get me booted out of your reading list. I saw the exhibition at the NGMA in New Delhi. However, given my views on the Bangalore NGMA (http://dillikidiva24.blogspot.in/2012/12/name-that-city.html), I'm pretty sure the exhibition will be similiar. ah well, here goes nothing.. If theres one painter from India people have heard of, chances are that it's Amrita Sher-Gill. She lived for only 28 years (1913- 1941) across two continents in four countries, was famous for her personal life (... [more]

New York Kathleen Elliot Tenri Cultural Institute of New York by Dominick Lombardi Kathleen Elliot's glass sculptures straddle the line between ritual and playfulness. Her work, which stems from a love of natural forms, explores how the wonders of nature, big and small, have an indisputable calming effect on us as we muddle through the distractions of daily life. Works such as Whispering Vine (2008) recall ceremonial dance, as a circle of latticed glass, capped with upward-reaching leaves,... [more]

Adel Gorgy, Traces of Pollock #3, 2013, Pigment Print, 40 x 72 in. (100 x 180 cm.) Adel Gorgy, in his current exhibition, Traces of Pollock, de Kooning and Warhol at Able Fine Art NY in Chelsea has brought keen observation, a graceful esthetic and a unique vision and process to an impressive body of work. In the current age of knockoffs and spinoffs, prequels and sequels, true originality of thought and expression, like Adel Gorgy's, is rare and worthy of attention. In a series of photographi... The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]

In Built to Kill, a short story by Venetian author Tiziano Scarpa, the protagonist is a frustrated architect from Venice. He feels so utterly constrained by the city’s architectural mandates to preserve a tourist-trapping golden past, that he starts killing tourists. Only he makes the murders look like suicides induced by Stendhal Syndrome, a psychosomatic disorder brought upon by an overdose of Renaissance beauty. A desperate attempt to prove that an urban space that doesn’t allow itself... [more]

After the first quick round of Art Synthesis, the eyes quickly bookmark certain works and artists for the latter, slower rounds but the mind, hungry for a single thread of narrative, doesn't find any. On contemplation, that turns out to be the mind's problem, not the artists'. So used our minds are with picking up a curator's text on entrance and viewing the entire exhibition through that lense, that they suddenly feel ill-at-ease when they have to be the meaningmakers themselves. It turns out tha... [more]

I like the slight melancholy mystery of these images. In general, the softened color palette and contrast evokes a faded memory, but the primary forms have a bold function. `Evolution´ employs a primordial form, spiraling up out of the water like a mythic sea creature. I also see the faintly grainy quality and washed out magenta tonality as harkening back to old photographic documentary film, though I`m unsure of the media/process employed here. I find the vertical orientation is also unexpected fo... [more]
