Did Starbucks Really Rip Off Maya Hayuk's Artwork?
by
7/13/15 Posted 7/13/15

Image via Starbucks Every artist worth their salt has their own distinctive aesthetic, and that proves especially important for graffiti and street art, where artists compete directly in the public space, not only to catch the eye of the passerby but to build an instantly recognizable identity within their community. Graffiti, after all, is all about whose tag is "up" the most in a territory. Brooklyn-based Maya Hayuk works both in the streets and the studio and her aesthetic is ubiquitous. With its pop ne... Organised with Middlesex University, DEN-City1 is part of The London Festival of Architecture, a month long celebration of architectural experimentation, thinking and practice. I’ m sure I... [more]

A gaggle of young adults dressed to the nines on a street corner in Silver Lake, CA, is not an uncommon occurrence. It probably happens every day for some reason or another. It’s not so common, however, when the entire street corner itself is also dressed up. At the intersection of Bates and Sunset, you can see an entire block coated in white wash. The former Bates Motel and its surroundings, including fences, barbed wire, palm trees, and shrubbery, are all covered in an organic, lime-ba... [more]

Boycott or Action? Bansky in Gaza
by
2/27/15 Posted 2/27/15

Shot simply and in his typical parodic style, Banksy's latest project to go viral is a short video that sees the anonymous street artist and activist enter the Gaza Strip. It is the first work the British artist has completed in the Palestinian territory, but in 2005 nine pieces of his art appeared on Israel's West Bank barrier. The two minute video is titled "Make this the year YOU discover a new destination"—a satirical reimagining of an aspirational travel ad. It ends with... [more]

Zakkir Hussain at GALLERYSKE - Bangalore > India

Zakir Hussain’s latest works at Gallery SKE in Bangalore is a wonderful presentation of works to understand that originality can only be claimed as an unclaimed, seen as the other in the final omnipresent grand narrative of itself. The claim to originality that his works make in the beginning is by having a title ‘no title’. This is very interesting as the self proclamation of having no title negates the presence of the trace of the past. If there is any coincide... [more]

Parra, the Dutch dude who draws weird psycho-sexual creatures and provides creative input for a brand hipsters would murder for, has a new show opening at Jonathan LeVine New York City tomorrow night. His last show at the gallery was in 2013. The images released for preview show the artist moving forward with his strident Post-Pop graphics on canvas, always repeated in his distinctive black-red-blue-white palette. In many ways, Parra is the perfect Post-Pop figure, putting out commercial paintings for the the former underground whose... [more]
