There are some great paintings by lessor known artists on display at the gallery right now. Walk around one of the modular walls and there are prints by Jasper Johns and a pristine example of Oldenburg's Profile Airflow. It is worth stopping by while the show is up. Many artists are in the show but surprisingly they all work very well together. There are some great Rupert Garcia's that I have never seen before. A wide mix of work. [more]

Though the recent showing of Ernest Doty seemed to correlate with the end of the occupy movement here in Oakland, I, like my fellow art patrons, was kind of hoping that Doty's art would stand on it's own-without the need to justify the art with the movement. It seemed, however, that because Doty was so involved and distracted with the movement that it inhibited the material he showed. Barely an artist/curator he is hardly qualified to review a b&w Art Exhibit, but, you know, fake it till you make it seems to work well in L.A., so ...
Is Yossi Govrin a genius? Who would have the guts to ask photographers to give up good (to great) 8 x 10 b&w prints for $25 price fixed? (Er, if sold.) Well, he bit and submitted five of his best. 134 of his contemporaries submitted some great stuff also.

The Art District on Santa Fe has a festive First Friday Open Galleries event at the beginning of every month. It is a fun street party with an eclectic mix of art lovers from newbies to collectors. All and all it is easy going without pretention. Check out the Santa Fe Arts District website for more information on the free shuttle as the traffic and parking can be heavy.
The Third Friday is also a little less crowded Open Galleries Night that typically attracts more of the art collector crowd. [more]

Buffing censorship at Crewest
Sadly Los Angeles is not unfamiliar with censorship. Mexican muralist David A. Siqueiros’ América Tropical was whitewashed in 1932 because the mural was “unpleasant” and it did not fit the civic leaders’ idea of the romantic and idealized past they wanted to convey to the tourists arriving at El Pueblo de Los Angeles. It is unfortunate that seventy-eight years later artists are still facing censorship.

I saw John Platt's work last year in a group show at Gallery 151 and was blown away! That piece sold before I had a chance to really consider it. Can't wait to see what they've put together this time. So happy to see Gallery 151 pop back up on the Bowery. I hope they become a permanant fixture. [more]
