Art or Not?

Art or Not? Who is to say what is art or not? One of the pictures with description below is a genuine art work: every Friday ArtSlant asks our discerning readers if they can spot the difference. This week, it's a bad hair day. #1 "Painted in two separate periods, this picture has a complex history. In its original state, it showed a pink-faced man, wearing a white shirt and a black suit. It was painted in a deliberately simple, naive style, using household, rather than oil paint, and incorporate... [more]

Christo’s Over The River Project May Be a Go, Finally
by
1/6/15 Posted 1/6/15

We previously reported on Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s proposed project Over The River, a two-week installation over the Arkansas River (you can see a video of the 79-year-old artist white-water rafting the river here), which has been plagued by various legal challenges. Today we got word that another important hurdle has been crossed. On January 2, 2015 a federal court upheld the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) approval of Over The River, based on their assessment of the ephemeral a... [more]

by
1/6/15 Posted 1/6/15

Parra, the Dutch dude who draws weird psycho-sexual creatures and provides creative input for a brand hipsters would murder for, has a new show opening at Jonathan LeVine New York City tomorrow night. His last show at the gallery was in 2013. The images released for preview show the artist moving forward with his strident Post-Pop graphics on canvas, always repeated in his distinctive black-red-blue-white palette. In many ways, Parra is the perfect Post-Pop figure, putting out commercial paint... [more]

Art or Not? Who is to say what is art or not? One of the pictures with description below is a genuine art work: every Friday ArtSlant asks our discerning readers if they can spot the difference. This week: Festive lights. #1 "In the 30-by-30-foot installation, participants must remove their shoes to walk on a carpet of towels that resemble prayer rugs. Gazing at an overhead thicket of neon signs, they soon realize that they are looking at hundreds of slang terms for the vagina." #2 "Stepping into the magnificently lit... [more]

ArtSlant Presents Philippa's Page 3 Pin-Ups
by
12/22/14 Posted 12/22/14

This week, Artslant Pin-Ups observes the fact that the birthday of our Lord and Savior the infant Christ is fast approaching, and chooses to share with our readers a totally innocuous artwork, instead of some smut: the lovely and less-than-PG-rated Slightly Open Clam-Shell, by Georgia O'Keeffe. Definitely 100 percent a painting of a clamshell, and nothing else (what's wrong with you, man?), this beautiful, totally non-sexualized and wholesome work from 1926 is a perfect expression of just how litt... Art or Not? Who is to say what is art or not? One of the pictures with description below is a genuine art work: every Friday ArtSlant asks our discerning readers if they can spot the difference. This week: Errant appendages #1 This artist's hyperreal sculptures examine the fragility of the human body. Prosthetics are a frequent interest in his celebrated body of work spanning 1985-1993, which deals with the artist's personal experiences and seeks to redress the way we look at disability; the abandoned... by

We're huge Ólafur Eliasson fans at ArtSlant. His sensitivity to site-specificity and deft hand at magical transformation through the merging of science and art is unique to say the least. Eliasson was tapped by the Louis Vuitton Foundation and their curatorial team lead by Suzanne Pagé to inaugurate Paris' newest museum designed by starchitect, Frank Gehry. Eliasson's installation Inside the Horizon—a series of mirrored, yellow columns—will also be permanently fe... [more]

Althea Thauberger Casts Kids as … Us Blake Gopnik, Thursday, December 18, 2014 This is a still from Althea Thauberger's video called “Preuzmimo Benčić (Take Back Benčić)", which I recently caught at Susan Hobbs gallery in Toronto. (Click on my image to view a clip.) Thauberger's work is always fiendishly complex but also reliably compelling, and this is no exception. The video is set and was shot in the Croatian port city of Rijeka, in the abandoned (but gorgeous) Rikard Benčić factory... [more]

The Eyes Have It – Gianpiero Acits and international aritsts explore the theme of Eyes in Art The eyes may be the window to the soul, but they are certainly our means of experiencing the visual arts. The gaze in art has been visited as subject matter for years, as the act of looking out from within the picture frame is frozen in time and revisited across the ages by those looking in. Contemporary painter and ophthalmologist Gianpiero Actis has focused his gaze even more tightly in his... [more]

Selected by London-based writer Philippa Snow, ArtSlant's Page 3 Pin-Ups is an acerbic take on the topless tabloid muse. The new weekly series is inspired by Playboy’s Playmates, Page Three, and Letters To Penthouse: for anyone who’s ever muttered the phrase “fuck contemporary art” and really meant it. Today’s internet-smashing pin-up is notable for the fact she has everything the modern gentleman wants: an ass that won’t quit, one that Sir Mix-A-Lot (O.B.E.) would love.... [more]
