Founded in 2005 by mosaic artist Laurel True, Institute of Mosaic Art is a world-class mosaic education and resource center offering students expert instruction in the mosaic arts in a fun and welcoming environment. We are the largest mosaic education center in the United States, offering the widest range of programming in the mosaic arts.
IMA is located in Oakland, California's Jingletown Arts District and is part of the Bay Area's thriving art scene as well as being a premier destination for mosaic, students, visitors and instructors from around the world.
Institute of Mosaic Art houses multiple classrooms and lecture spaces with lots of room to create. We are proud to offer an extensive curriculum of of over 80 unique classes and workshops in both contemporary and traditional mosaic techniques for students of all levels - from beginner to professional.
Two large exhibition spaces feature rotating mosaic exhibitions of professional and student work and our permanent collection includes mosaic sculpture and installations throughout the building and on many of the buildings in our neighborhood.
IMA hosts nationally and internationally known mosaic artists and arts professionals for our Visiting Artist Series and offers a Mosaic Lecture & Adventure Series which showcases the work of mosaic artists around the world.
We strive to create and foster a culture and creative exploration and learning while offering solid technical instruction in an atmosphere of community and support. We work hard to develop unique programming that will educate and inspire. Our staff and visiting instructors have extensive experience as professionals in their fields who bring their unique vision, expertise, style to IMA.
