SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - 27 October 2009 (for immediate release) Micaëla Gallery is proud to present "Winter Salon 2009," a multi-media exhibition.
"Winter Salon 2009" introduces new work by a selected group of artists whose work responds to a world in flux, where uncertainty about the environment, economy and changing societal norms yields creative output, evokes a nostalgic past, blurs the present, and charges into the unknown future.
Franziska Klotz roams Berlin in search of stories to collect and paint onto massive stretches of canvas. Narrating life's simplicities, whether a hospital waiting room or an urban camp ground, with expressive applications of paint and mixed media, Klotz renders bright sweetness to an otherwise dark story. Alex Bernstein, sculpting with cast glass and steel, interprets growth with gestures of light against sober steel. Nicole Schmoelzer, working in sync with the seasons and her environment, produces swathes of luminous paint and somber shadow across linen canvas.
Carmen Spera's "House of Cards," an allegory of wretched excess and vulnerability, is emphasized by its construction of fragile glass. Prema Murthy's "Tectonics," an archival digital print series, shapes globalization as a force of change-producing ruptured physical and geographic bodies - like a puzzle, her work is characterized by ambiguity, and heightened by the unknown. Contributions by Marie-Lou Desmeules riff on this concept with her disturbing use of performance, photography, and paint.
