Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce "The Blue Planet", an exhibition of new paintings by Anne Appleby, October 14th through November 14th.

Appleby's new series of encaustic paintings will be devoted to images of the planet Earth. Starting with the tonal abstractions of blue and green, the main colors visible on a globe or satellite picture, the artist has conceived a cycle of diptychs addressing this dichotomy of sea and land, of water and the life it sustains.

Past works of Anne Appleby have paid homage to the mutable images of water and plant life. In her more than 20-year studio practice, she has refined a painting technique that allies observation of color in nature with a technique of pure painterly abstraction. Her results are beautiful surfaces, with delicate translucent layers upon layers of different colors.  The eye experiences the blend of absorbed and reflected light emanating from the painting in the way it tries to focus on the surface of a leaf or a stream. In her new works, the reverence paid blue and green suggests the way we might picture the essence of our planet: as the archetypal partners water and life.

"My paintings aren't about the other world. They're about our place in this world.  What nourished the soul is the experience of being in the body."
