> DESCRIPTION

Traywick Contemporary is pleased to announce an exhibition of works on paper by Bay Area artist Lena Wolff.  This will be Wolff’s first solo show with Traywick Contemporary.

Lena Wolff is inspired by the hand-crafted tradition of folk and textile art, and draws equally from contemporary art practices that rely on a transformation of materials and media.  She combines paper cut-outs and collage with a physical manipulation of surfaces including pinpricks, hole punch and cutting.  Wolff’s veneration for the natural world can be seen in the menagerie of plants, insects and animals that inhabit some of the work.  In others, her use of fragments, patterns and shapes in creating a multi-layered and dimensional composition reveals a more abstract focus.  By infusing a traditional medium with a contemporary aesthetic, Wolff’s intricate works on paper inspire a folk-art state of being both fantastical and fluid.

Lena Wolff earned an MFA from San Francisco State University (2003) and a BA from Mills College (1995). Wolff has exhibited locally at the San Francisco Fine Arts Museum’s Legion of Honor, the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, Southern Exposure, and Headlands Center for the Arts. She recently received commissions for public projects from both the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Alameda County Arts Commission.
