Opening at Brian Gross Fine Art on July 2, 2009, Paper / Mylar / Vellum
is a group exhibition featuring selected works by gallery artists that
explore the use of three foundational mediums—paper, mylar, and
vellum—in the form of prints, paintings, mixed media and drawings.
Artists to be included are Joe Amrhein, Lewis deSoto, Josh Dov, Donald
Feasél, Linda Fleming, Robert Jack, Stephen Sollins, Nellie King
Solomon and Andrea Way. The show runs through August 26.
On
display will be the KLS series of digital prints by multi-media artist
Lewis deSoto. Inspired by the Hermann Hesse novella, Klingsor’s Last
Summer, deSoto traces the colors described in each chapter of the
story. With a system of analyzation using internet searches and image
processing, he determines the palette of colors used to make each ring
in the circular compositions. They comprise a powerful installation of
ten framed works.
In counterpoint to deSoto will be a new eight by eight foot painting on mylar, Loud Cloud,
by San Francisco painter Nellie King Solomon. Solomon has hit her
stride in recent paintings, with bold, dramatic gestures and a sense of
exuberance in non-traditional materials. New York artist Joe Amrhein
will display a signature work that reproduces phrases from art
criticism painted as signage on mylar strips. Bay Area sculptor Linda
Fleming will exhibit a new five foot drawing, and Andrea Way will show
a new ballpoint pen drawing that is a veritable patchwork of inked
patterns. Other works on view will be a painting on vellum by Donald
Feasél, and works on paper by artists Josh Dov, Robert Jack and Stephen
Sollins.
Project Room: An adjunct exhibition of
works on paper by Bay area legends Robert Arneson, Joan Brown, Richard
Diebenkorn, Roy De Forest and James Weeks.
