Ilana Crispi is a ceramic and mixed media artist based in San Francisco. Focusing on the space around things, instead of the things themselves, Crispi has sculpted shadows and footprints of objects no longer present. With her installation at ATA, Crispi is creating sculptural translations of previous actions.

Things will be changing throughout the month.  Salt crystals are growing on the glass.  In an abstraction of the background of Durer’s Melencolia, rainbow forms and comets from Saturn have come forward and hit the window.  17th century explorations of perspective have gone from two dimensional illusions to occupy actual space.

The window has been a place to display and to look.  Crispi is looking at ways of navigating illustrations of what we see.  What you will see in the window at ATA is a view of what usually happens behind closed doors. It is a project space, a progression towards creating an exhibition.  Instead of a polished presentation of a finished work, this one is always under construction.
