Marking her fourth solo exhibition with Marx & Zavattero, New York photographer Liséa Lyons debuts a new series of chromogenic prints in an exhibition titled "Lineage", May 23 - July 2, 2009. Lyons' current work weaves images of her own past with that of her primary subject - her teenage daughter - creating a dialogue that speaks to expectations, memory, and loss.

For the first time, Lyons will show several old family photos scanned and re-printed. This new direction provides an exciting new arc to her already nostalgic sensibility. In addition to images of Lyons herself as a young child, seminal individuals and locations that have influenced her work are now made visible, including her parents and grandparents, as well as the Florida neighborhood and home where she grew up.

While a narrative element permeates all of Lyons' work, it dissolves quickly into an ephemeral moment in time. Sometimes idyllic, her richly colored pictures hint at a dark side - dreams unfulfilled, false realities, and danger. Recognized for the candid, snapshot quality of her pictures that offer shy glimpses of her subjects, Lyons' addition of more straightforward family shots is quietly unsettling. This personal gesture, juxtaposed with the new images of her daughter continuing to mature, affects a sense of the passage of time: a concise, lived-through flashback that is quite extraordinary.

In the recent monograph "Liséa Lyons", published through the Cavallo Point Artist Program, PhotoAlliance Executive Director Thom Sempere writes: "Throughout, the pictures call toward the romantic and the empowering trust of the naïve. But this hope, ultimately measured and tempered, brings us to the greater understanding that innocence walks a razor thin line. What makes these images works of art is that we, as viewers, experience both simultaneously."

Lyons is a featured artist in the Cavallo Point Artist Program, Sausalito, CA and the subject of a recent monograph published by Fort Baker Retreat Group LLC. She has exhibited on both coasts, including the 2005 solo exhibition "Haunted" at The Center for Photography, Woodstock, NY; "See Jane Run" at The Bedford Gallery, Walnut Creek, CA; and at the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts, Kiyosato, Japan. Lyons' work is in the permanent collection of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts, Kiyosato, Japan; The Center for Photography, Woodstock NY; the J.P. Morgan Chase Art Collection, San Francisco and New York; and Adobe Systems, San José, CA. Her work has been reviewed and featured in ARTnews, Art in America, the San Jose Mercury News, the San Francisco Examiner, the SF Weekly, and Artweek. Lyons received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2001, and studied with Larry Sultan at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in the late 1990s.
