> DESCRIPTION

Ping Pong Gallery is pleased to present LIVE & DIRECT, a group exhibition opening May 8th and running until June 5th, 2009. This exhibition will feature the work of Erin Allen, John Chiara, Renée Gertler, Scott Hewicker, Donna Huanca, Bessma Khalaf, Travis Meinolf, Nyeema Morgan, Erik Scollon and is curated by Amanda Curreri.

Each artist was asked to contribute an Artwork and (an) Action to be presented for one month, Live & Direct. For some, the artwork and action become intertwined, others have chosen to keep them mutually exclusive. The gallery is full to capacity, and then some. Events are scheduled throughout the month in satellite locations and at the gallery. You’ll find a Goon Squad boutique, a shameless shrine, and a pile of cast assholes. One artist invites you to join him in crafting one of his large scale photographs. Another will perform a song he wrote for a painting he made, both for the occasion.

As a test of what can be expected from a gallery experience, LIVE & DIRECT challenges the artists, the visitors, and the gallery space to up the ante. What do we desire from art exhibitions? What do we need? From each other, and from ourselves? LIVE & DIRECT presents and promotes the work of the artists involved but also implores all involved to consider an expanded relationship of artwork and the world around us. See Calendar of Events for ongoing events throughout the month.

8pm DONNA HUANCA PRESENTS GOON SQUAD HEADQUARTERS*
Taking for inspiration the interior design blueprints of the legendary London boutique, Biba, The Goon Squad Headquarters will be a structure that will showcase Donna's garment creations.

Biba is often regarded as having been the most beautiful department store in the world. It was conceived during the 60s, in a decadent mélange of retro design styles. However this very luxe style was created in a definite departure from the kind of slickness we have grown accustomed to in current designer stores. Everything in Biba, employed artisnal crafting methods instead of impersonal mass production.

The Goon Squad would like to take this method of working as a point of departure. We want to build a prototype of fabulousness suitable for our times and means. This structure will document this attempt towards retail utopia.
