Auto de Fé
Pastels and Paintings by Otto Aguilar
October 20 through October 30, 2007
Back to the Picture Latin American Gallery - 934 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA 94110
Back to the Picture Latin American Gallery welcomes Berkeley artist Otto Aguilar in Auto de Fé, a solo exhibition in which the Nicaraguan-born artist reflects upon what it means to be Catholic, gay, and Latin American. Through varying uses of intensely and subtely contrasting colors, textures, and lines, Aguilar expresses sensuality through his lovingly-rendered figure studies, but always with a dark, brooding undertone. Aguilar paints inner conflict and tension expressively and with a hint of diabolical glee, overlaying traditional Catholic imagery with his abstracted backgrounds, his version of a fiery afterlife.
