Subversiveness can take many forms.  What could be more political than pushing against the status quo and insisting on maintaining a practice that has been all but dismissed as irrelevant?  At a time when spectacle and objectlessness has been de rigueur, many artists have held a different sort of vision.  Things such as materials, process, color, and form used in a non-representational or near-nonrepresentational hybrid aesthetic can have a powerful effect, one that can get under our skin in unexpected ways.  In 2009, abstraction is Alive and Kicking!  This exhibition celebrates its many possibilities.
