From September through December 2008, SoEx’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB) members, teaching artists and Community Partners have transformed SoEx’s 14th Street back gallery into a classroom and workshop space devoted to YAB. YAB members have immersed themselves in a healthy dialogue around stereotypes, personal experiences and documentation, with a focus on photography and video literacy, black and white film processing, video production, storyboarding, set design, installation and urban typography. On December 12th, YAB presents their investigations with the screening of Centipeace, alongside a photo and prop installation and exhibition inspired by the video’s set. Centipeace revisits early 1980’s video game aesthetics and promotes a dialogue around the harmful effects of stereotypes that relate to teenagers and the transformative power that comes from self-definition.
