> DESCRIPTION

Brian Gross Fine Art is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of work by acclaimed Bay Area sculptor, Linda Fleming, opening Saturday, November 2, 2013 with a reception for the artist from 4-6 pm.  The exhibition titled, Evanescent: Sculpture, Wall Sculptures and Drawings, will include free standing sculptures, polychrome wall sculptures, and a selection of small gouache studies on view through December 21, 2013.

In this body of work, Fleming explores the essence of the transitory with physical materials. Fleming’s mulit-colored powder-coated steel sculptures are investigations of the metaphysics of geometric forms. Through the application of color to organic forms inspired by nature, Fleming’s sculptures play with spatial form and movement. The use of color, light, and shadows allow the geometric forms to expose and define the architecture of the work.

On display will be Crackle, a large-scale powdered-coated steel sculpture which measures 102 x 174 x 144 inches. The scale of the work enables the viewer to enter the sculpture directly experiencing it as a 3 dimensional environmental work. Also on view is Planetesimal, a freestanding work that physically cannot be entered, but allows the viewer to visually explore the many openings allowing for exploration of overlapping surfaces and geometry.

Continuing with her execution of color and shadows, Fleming’s polychrome wall sculptures are fabricated by using layered panels that are precisely spaced apart allowing the colors and shapes to project and embody the surrounding space. Fleming invites the viewer into her thought process with a display of a small selection of gouache studies displaying the intricate color combinations while depicting the sensations conjured by the process.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Linda Fleming received her education at Carnegie Mellon University and is currently the Chair of the Sculpture Department at the California College of the Arts. In 2007, she had a mid-career retrospective, titled Refugium, at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is represented in major public and private collections, including the Oakland Museum of California, Berkeley Art Museum, Albuquerque Art Museum, Djerassi Foundation, Woodside, CA, Cantor Art Center at Stanford University, Runnymede Sculpture Farm, Woodside, CA, and Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, MO, among others. Evanescent: Sculpture, Wall Sculpture and Drawings will be on view through December 21, 2013
