Practicing to Pretend is a group exhibition guest curated by Melissa Dickenson and William Emmert that features new works from David Bayus, Kate Bonner, Rebekah Goldstein, Evan Nesbit, Nikki Painter, and Jonah Susskind.
These artists are makers and masters of their own technique not limited by material. The inquiry of their practice resides in that of light, color, and space working inside of comfort, but pushing beyond the edge into discomfort. The work in Practicing to Pretend motions towards that of the abstract with a strong emphasis on composition.
David Bayus is interested in the composite image, one that is arrived at through an obsessive process of documentation, preparation, and addition of materials. Kate Bonner questions appropriation and the original through what can be described as a fragmented collage. Rebekah Goldstein situates the content of her paintings using form and color creating calculated and vibrant formulation. Evan Nesbit’s work is wrapped up in the physicality of vision. His paintings convey an immediacy that allow the viewer’s curiosity to wander. Nikki Painter disassociates architecture through her installations. The focal point is often difficult to locate but a clear design is present from every angle. A disruption is found in Jonah Susskind’s work. Paintings double as sculpture and three-dimensions as two—further he invites time in as material by the act of moving through the work.
While a great deal of effort goes into the process of creating an end product for these artists, what the viewer sees can often be a different experience. Practicing to Pretend offers the moments necessary to see the incredible depth present in the works. The real question at hand then asks how did this come to be?
