“The Hyena Report” illustrates adult themes in a childlike style through text and images, referencing educational articles on animals and children’s books.  Katz uses an anthropomorphic illustration style, and fanciful hand lettering in an iridescent palette to create a blend of fact and fiction about hyenas.  The mixed media illustrations tease the boundaries between the cute and the nasty.

Hyenas have been vilified throughout human history primarily due to the form of their gendered bodies, leading to misconceptions and superstitions. Katz presents the social and sexual aspects of hyenas through thirteen statements of facts.  As Katz says “…the hyena’s history of marginalization provides numerous parallels with sexual outsider experience in our culture.”
