Chandler Fine Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent oil paintings by Margaret Fitzgerald. This is her fifth solo show in the gallery.

The title of the exhibition, "Inhabit", refers both to a specific painting and to her paintings in general. These pictures investigate the idea of construction and deconstruction through the use of multiple layers of paint. There is a striking juxtaposition between deliberate and spontaneous compositional elements.

Building up layers of paint and then scraping through these layers to reveal the passage of time and thought that lies beneath the surface yields paintings of great solidity and complexity. Often adding apparently random numbers, letters or words to the surface creates yet another layer. It is up to the viewer to interpret what, if any meaning is intended by this information.

Ms Fitzgerald studied at the School of Visual Arts, New York and Instituto Allende, Mexico. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico.

In 2014, Margaret Fitzgerald will have solo exhibitions at Space, London, England and at the Ross Art Museum, Ohio Wesleyan University.

Ms Fitzgerald lives with her husband in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
