Smoke signals are one of the oldest forms of visual communication. Whether used to transmit, initiate, or warn, smoke signals convey plain yet stark information through the skies above. Artist Dan Allende’s public project issues a message with smoke signals in response to the recent US election. Using Morse code, the message, released in response to Obama’s inauguration speech, will arrive via jet stream in Washington during the State of the Union. Connecting the two historic moments together across the expanse of this nation, it creates a poetic response to the state of the country and the ideas lingering overhead. A website, videos, and an essay will launch between January 21-29, 2013.
