Atelier is pleased to present the third installment of its Emerging Artist Series featuring Ned Axthelm and Leo Bugel.
Nex Axthelm explores what he terms the power dynaimcs between strangers within the public sphere. Axthelm begins by photographing his future subjects -- sometimes without their knowledge. He then translates the photo to the canvas, enhancing or changing the color, texture and perspective in order to control the viewer's gaze and involvement with the work. By doing this, Axthelm manipulates the relationship between the viewer and subject, ultimately "enveloping the viewer in the power dynamic."
In his series, Urban Geometry, Leo Bugel presents a fresh interpretation of the familiar metropolitan landscape. Drawing his inspiration from the urban, industrial aspects of the city, Bugel then juxtaposes vivid hues with pastels, obicular tress with linear buildings, distinguising between the organix and man-made. Primarily concerned with paint application and color, Bugel is able to draw the viewer into what he describes as his own "fantastical worlds."
