Gale Antokal applies chalk pastel as a painter glazes with oil, achieving light and tonal complexity rarely seen in her medium. She returns to a 2 ½ decade focus on still-life, presenting 30 small format chalk pastel drawings of one utilitarian object. The scalloped edge, and functional use of her object suggest the exhibition title, Blossom, however the title is where comparison to flora ends. A meticulous investigation of form and color, the 17 x 22 inch pastel drawings thoroughly surpass expectations.
Gale Antokal is a Professor in the School of Art at San Jose State University, California. She held several visiting artist positions and teaching positions including the San Francisco Art Institute, the Lehrhaus Institute, and the American College in Jerusalem. Antokal received a Visual Arts Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is included in both public and private collections nationally and internationally.
