Outside In

Chandra Cerrito Contemporary is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Esther Traugot: Outside In. Traugot’s sculptures and installations are comprised of natural objects that are "gilded" with hand-dyed, crocheted yarn. Suspended from the ceiling, lining the gallery walls and presented as specimens on pedestals, her sculptural arrangement creates a peculiar world onto itself. Plant roots, seashells and a twenty-foot long vine are partially wrapped in gold-colored sheaths reminiscent of lichen, bandages or golden skins. According to Traugot, “these support structures investigate the relationship between nurturing and controlling nature.” Her laborious act of crocheting is one of both protection and veneration.

Residing in the Bay Area, Esther Traugot received her BFA in painting at UC Berkeley in 2005 and her MFA in Studio Art at Mills College in 2009. She has exhibited internationally, as well as throughout Northern CA including at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art and di Rosa in Napa. This is her third exhibition at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary.

About Chandra Cerrito Contemporary: Established in 2007 as a curatorial project space, Chandra Cerrito Contemporary features exhibitions and site-specific installations that highlight exceptional regional and national artists, with an emphasis on conceptual strength, refined craftsmanship, contemporary vision and art historical relevance.
