> DESCRIPTION

Park Life is proud to present Remainders, an exhibition of new paintings by Sonya Derman. Sonya’s recent work is an evolving combination of paintings and texts exploring residual images that accumulate from everyday life. Using left-over, faded associations from daily life, fragmented memories from different places, and imagined narratives, the work shifts between the clear and unreadable; the real and the constructed; the concrete and the abstract. Her paintings can be read as fragments, entered into from various points; non-linear elements of an elusive and on-going narrative. The works allude to a temporary nature of interpersonal communications, forming, breaking apart while exploring the fragile constructions of meaning through images and words.

For this exhibit Sonya will be presenting works of gouache and acrylic on paper as well as an installation of found materials.

Sonya Derman currently lives in London, where she is pursuing an MA at the Royal College of Art. She was recently awarded the Julian Trevelyan Residency, which will culminate in an exhibition and publication of writings and artworks produced with an art group at Southwark Pensioners Centre in London.

Alongside painting and drawing, she is also interested in collaborative projects, writing, and artist books. By combining these modes of production, she explores the relationship between making, viewing, and the creative act of interpretation; the ways that art practices can move both within and beyond the gallery.
