In keeping with the tradition of presenting reductive painting here at Haines Gallery we are pleased to announce a group painting exhibition entitled Fundamental Abstraction II. This exhibition is comprised of recent work by 15 artists each individually distinctive in their sensibility, varied in their approach to abstract painting yet delivered with a highly rigorous practice.
This is not the first time these artists have shown here. In fact, all share one cojmmon link in that they were introduced to Hianes Gallery by New York based independent curator Kim Wauson. Well recognized for his ability to identify remarkable work often underappreciated by the marketplace, Kim's vision was exceptionally refined and the uncoditional support for the artists he believed in was without ego and unparalleled in its pure intent. Many artists owe much to his early support and encouragement.
Kim passed away recently in NYC and this exhibition has been curated in his honor. His friendship and advocacy for artists will be sorely missed, as will his ongoing collaboration with Haines Gallery and our director Cheryl Haines.
In recognition of Kim's love of art and artists, it seems fitting to honor what Kim held most dear: the encouragement of the creative process. We have thus created "THE WAUSON" Fellowship that will be given on an annual basis to an emerging artist of exceptional promise. This award consists of $5,000.00 and a two-week residency at the FOR-SITE Foundation. The initial funding for this award is coming from the proceeds of work sold from the Fundamental Abstraction II exhibition with both the gallery and the artists fully participating in donating the proceeds on the sale of the work.
