In a lengthy career notably devoted to the concept of legacy and institutional critique, Kaltenbach’s output has been “full of secrets and misdirection, mysteries and invisibility, hoaxes and questionable ethics, mischievous games and invented personae, sly humor and deferred surprises set to go off in the future like time bombs.” Joining Kaltenbach in conversation will be Constance Lewallen, Adjunct Curator at BAM/PFA.
Recent solo exhibitions have been presented at Verge Gallery, Sacramento; Another Year in L.A., Los Angeles; Marzona Sculpture Park, Verzegnis; Konrad Fischer, Dusseldorf; and Lawrence Markey Gallery, New York. In 1969, he had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 1969 and 1970 he was included in several key group exhibitions, including Information at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; When Attitudes Become Form at Kunsthalle Bern in Switzerland; March at Seth Siegelaub, New York, and Nine at Leo Castelli at the Castelli Warehouse. He lives and works in Davis, California.
Constance Lewallen is Adjunct Curator at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. As Senior Curator at the BAM from 1998 to 2007, she curated many major exhibitions, among them: Dream of the Audience: Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (1951–1982); Everything Matters: Paul Kos, a Retrospective; Ant Farm (1968-1978); and A Rose Has No Teeth: Bruce Nauman in the 1960s. Her exhibition State of Mind: New California Art Circa 1970, which includes work by Kaltenbach, will be on view at the Orange County Museum of Art from October 9, 2011 to January 22, 2012, and will travel to the BAM in spring 2012.
