Theophilus Brown is one of the great figures in 20th century California art and one of the pioneering members of the Bay Area Figurative Movement in the 1950s. At 92, he is still in his studio every day. His mind and his wit remain razor sharp.
In this exhibition, we are pleased to present paintings and drawings from through-out his long and productive career, most of which have never been shown before. Included are a number of small gems he set aside for himself, plus major figure paintings and lesser known work from his urban industrial series during the 1980s. A new monograph will commemorate this exhibition and a documentary film on “The Charmed Life of Theophilus Brown” is in production.
