Pieces-of-you-topia
Our things in our hands must be equals, comrades… !
Alexander Rodchenko, Paris, 1925.
In a materialistic culture there is a gap between process and material. The relationship between the producer and the consumer is veiled. Material objects are fetishized as exchange-value is emphasized over use-value and the market fills the gap with new desires and identities, provided by the shiny new “things in our hands…”
Pieces-of-you-topia is an exhibition and alternative residency project exploring a new kind of materialism. The artists in the exhibition are engaged in a practice where object and process exist in tandem, with shifting values. In some instances the object may be a small remnant of the process, but the process is indebted to the object for its existence. Process brings us closer to the material. Through process, the material instructs us how we might engage with our material world and, in turn, reconnect with ourselves. Unveiling the making behind each of the artists projects, this residency exposes a humanness within material objects, and our humanistic relationship to them.
