Land of Magic: Artists Explore Make Believe is a dynamic exhibition profiling 13 artists working in a wide variety of genres and media from painting and printmaking to photography and video. The artists in Land of Magic do what artists do best—leave conventional reality behind to create alternate universes, taking us on a captivating visual adventure into untapped arenas utilizing Magic Realism, Surrealism, and Fantasy. Their range of ages, cultures and experiences come through in the way they explore illusion, outer space, inner space and their connections to the land around them. Their fantasy-scapes feature astronauts, flying saucers, plant life, furry pets, basketball hoops and gangs of children, gathered from conscious and unconscious memories of childhood or visions of the future. Several artists in Land of Magic create a wonderland of seemingly spontaneous poetic creations, while others produce narratives located in some twilight zone between dream and reality. Themes of escape, desire and reverie are portrayed with personal and eccentric charm with artworks that bridge the gap between real and surreal.
