Modernbook Gallery

Modernbook Gallery is pleased to present its sixth annual juried show of Bay Area Photographers. Curated by artist, Brigitte Carnochan, and Modernbook owners, Mark Pinsukanjana and Bryan Yedinak, 16@49 features the work of sixteen fine art photographers. Hosted to showcase the diversity and creativity of contemporary photographic work available in the Bay Area today, 16@49 features photographs of landscape, dreamscape, wildlife, street life, the passion of the opera, and the soaring majesty of birds in flight. A breadth of technique is used to create the correct mood for each image and includes photogravure etching, Polaroid transfer, mixed photographic media and cutting edge digital processes.

Agneta Viklund’s seagulls portray poetry in motion while Susan Hillyard's black and white images of birds in flight evoke a contemplative mood and a reverence for nature.  Raven Victoria Erebus’ work is a fusion of old and new, of the poetic and prosaic. Symbolism and the collage of themed imagery allow Maria Foley to explore the vicissitudes of a spiritual journey.  Tony Maridakis’ photographs transport the viewer to an altered sense of place and time, places we might visit in dream or memory. Christine Alicino’s “Inside/Out” experiments with the boundaries of body image to create ephemeral characters on a dreamlike stage. Ronit Citri's Plan View denotes an architect's perspective of surface that draws us into her internal world. In The Dealership Wreck, Kirk Crippens makes vivid the uncertainty of our troubled times. Jeanne VanderPloeg’s work, Into the Wild, focuses on the majesty and extraordinary wildlife of Botswana and South Africa. In Of Light and Land, Robert Adler portrays the beauty of Big Sur, Yosemite, and the Eastern Sierras. In short snatches of time before and during performances at the San Francisco opera, John Martin captures moments between suicide and conflagration and after near-rape and murder. Susan Carnahan's red-crowned cranes dance in the winter landscape of Hokkaido and capture the elegance and grace of these birds beloved in Asian art. For Terry Thompson urban landscape and signage offer the opportunity to find beauty in what is usually over-looked or regarded as detritus. Grace Ensign Seidman uses pattern, form, color and structure to expose the simplicity and beauty found in nature. Shooting with Polaroid film allows Mike James to convey the ethereal and timeless beauty of the garden.  Susan Neville traveled through Cuba and searched out natural unposed shots that express both the character of the person and the beauty of the country.
