MacArthur B Arthur is pleased to present Nothing Happens Without You, an exhibition of new work by Jay Dion and Rie Hirai.

Nothing Happens Without You is a series of works for MacArthur B Arthur Gallery by Oakland-based artists Jay Dion and Rie Hirai. Dion and Hirai are recent California College of the Arts MFA graudates and this exhibition marks their first collaborative effort, exploring threads and themes familiar to their solo practice. Their works focus on responsibility, obligation and community activism associated within gift economies and hand-crafted objects and the social interactions that surround them. The exhibition is a reflection on reciprocity and the act of the collaboration and partnership, drawing out the mutual responsibilities and care in relationships. Through drawing, performance, video and installation, Dion and Hirai playfully and thoughtfully consider the connectedness and cycle of human relationships. Nothing Happens Without You invites the viewer to engage and will expand and evolve over its three week run with paintings that reflect your participation. Please join us for the opening and closing. Come hungry and leave happy.
