D-Structure presents The Shallow Space: New Works by Alec Huxley. The show opens on Friday, February 4th 2011 at 8pm.
In The Shallow Space, Alec Huxley explores space travel and the cosmos through film, tabloid journalism, gender, sex roles and 1950's style illustration. Originally a painter of urban landscapes, this show continues his evolution towards more narrative work incorporating dynamic characters and graphic compositions. Blending his traditional backgrounds of city streets, helmet-headed figures float in and dart out of what could be frames from film noir. Other works show stark extraterrestrial environments populated with layers of idealized characters from classical advertising illustration. All pieces draw from the fantasy of limitless cosmic travel while playing with people's role in the early space-race.
After 12 years in Seattle, Alec Huxley recently transplanted to San Francisco's Lower Haight. A self taught painter, his background includes photography, graphic design, a BA from the University of Puget Sound, studies at The School of Visual Concepts in Seattle and a career in the printing industry before committing to art full time in 2009. He is the founder of Adult Flavored Pudding. His work can be seen at adultflavoredpudding.com and alechuxley.com.
