One of the first U.S. museums to embrace time-based media artworks,
SFMOMA boasts a dynamic collection that spans the history of the genre.
This exhibition brings together a number of pioneering works created in
the 1970s — a particularly rich period in the evolution of experimental
media — drawn primarily from the museum’s holdings. Encompassing video,
slide-projection, and film installations by Vito Acconci, Dara
Birnbaum, Peter Campus, Dan Graham, Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson,
Joan Jonas, Dennis Oppenheim, Richard Serra, and Katharina Sieverding,
the selection on view emphasizes the artists' shared interest in
collaboration. The first major showcase of SFMOMA's media arts
collection in the museum's Mario Botta-designed building, the
presentation offers visitors a rare glimpse of 20th-century
masterpieces by some of the most influential artists of our time.
